Stephen Frail has established an exceptional record in the game over the course of a 13 year coaching career in Scottish football. Most recently the Head Coach of Celtic’s elite development squad, Stephen has consistently played a key role in the progression of young talent into senior football while also contributing to the coaching of established first team players.
Stephen is a highly skilled coach with a proven ability to design and deliver long term training programmes in line with a club’s development strategy and playing philosophy. Key Achievements
- Won his Celtic team’s league title five seasons in a row (2009/10, 2010/11, 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2013/14) as it developed from the Scottish Premier U19 League to the U20 League and then the SPFL Development League
- Won the SFA Youth Cup five times - 2009/10, 2010/11, 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2014/15
- 4 Played a key role in the development of several players that progressed to make first team appearances, including James Forrest, Liam Henderson, Callum McGregor and Tony Watt
- Developed strong relationships with Neil Lennon and then Ronny Deila that led to consistent coaching of established first team players such as Scott Brown, Kris Commons, Leigh Griffiths and Anthony Stokes
- Managed the Celtic development squad in the 2011/12 and 2012/13 NextGen Series, the 2013/14 UEFA Youth League, and the 2014/15 Premier League International Cup
- 4 Finished 3rd in a group with Barcelona, Marseille and Manchester City in the 2011/12 NextGen Series, beating Manchester City both home and away as well as Marseille at Celtic Park
- Beat PSV Eindhoven in the group stage of the 2012/13 NextGen Series as well as drawing with eventual winners Aston Villa
- Played Barcelona, AC Milan and Ajax in the group stage of the UEFA Youth League, beating Ajax 4-1 and drawing with AC Milan
- Reached the quarter-finals of the Premier League International Cup, winning a group containing Everton, Sunderland and Villarreal after going unbeaten, before losing to Manchester City on penalties
- 4 Reached the semi-finals of the 2007/08 Scottish League Cup with Hearts, beating Celtic 2-0 in the quarter-finals
- Reached the final of the 2005/06 SFA Youth Cup with Hearts Under 19s
